Netherwing Dragons

Lorebounds Library is proud to present you with this written explanation of the story of the Netherwing Dragons in the World of Warcraft universe

The Netherwing Dragons

These dragons exist primarily on the questionably habitable world of Draenor, which was destroyed by Ner'zhul when he had opened several hundred different portals all across the planet, injecting magical energy into the ley lines of the world at such immense amounts that the planet literally started to rip and tear, it's continents were ejected into the twisting nether with such a ruinous force. What remains today are nothing more than the floating remnants of what once was.

However before the planet was destroyed, it was noticed and thought of as a potential safe haven that his flight could control and prosper without the worry of any impediment in that goal. As the story goes, Deathwing hid away cache's of his black Dragon Eggs, which would spawn the intended army needed to conquer and control a whole planet. He also intended to find a safer place for his dragons to live without fear of the constant threat from those who sought to end his flight and their evil schemings. Hunters from both the many mortal races and the other dragon-flights themselves were always a threat to Deathwing and his entire flight.

Deathwing made his perch in Blades Edge mountains, which was also where another formidable force lived, although Gruul and his gronn were native to the planet and saw themselves as defending their home when attacking all of the black dragons that were in the mountains, along with Deathwing, who was understandably pretty pissed off as the ginormous dumb brute were mercilessly killing his kids and destroying his eggs, killing the unborn drakes inside.

Deathwing decided he'd end the battle by attacking Gruul outright, landing on the massive gronns back from the air and victimizing the massive creature like a . Khadgar, who was there with the Alliance expedition to help the gronn of Blades Edge in their fight against the dragons, placed a particular spell that dislodged the Adamantium plates which were holding the dragons unstable body together. Eventually the battle was won by the gronn and their allies in the Alliance Expedition. Having gotten what they came for, the skull of Gul'dan which was in Deathwings possession, they left Blades edge.

Whatever dragon eggs Deathwing had brought to the world were believed destroyed at this point, and there would be no evidance to prove otherwise until after the Netherwing Dragons awoke, alone and confused on a partially destroyed but still brutally savage world, where resources were scarce and survival an almost endless struggle.

Its not quiet known how the first of the Netherwing came to survive in an environment that basically guaranteed the opposite. However, there was a group of netherwing dragons that survived because the Dragonmaw Clan, an orc clan from Shadowmoon Valley, subjugated them after finding them wandering and alone, with no one to protect them......

Random Fact:
Netherwing Whelps are cute vicious little beasts with a kind and gentle soul, really...I think.

for in game details.

In the Burning Crusade expansion we got access to a painfully long quest line that involved us helping the Netherwing in Shadowmoon Valley by infiltrating the Shadowmoon orc Clan and hurting them from within. We don't actually get to dismantle or destroy the clan, we just help the Netherwing being held in captivity by taking the role of an undercover agent, secreting away eggs from the rest of the clan, spoiling the food supply, beating the peons to death..I mean that litteraly.. And the best part is; we get an awesome ad positively epic flying mount that still requires a very tedious and extremely time consuming grind, but it is undoubtedly worth it.

There isn't anything that I've found detailing what happened to the Netherwing after TBC, but I found the Dragonmaw Clan in the Twilight Highlands, hearing from one of the NPCs there that they crossed over to Azeroth and began life anew, leaving behind Shadowmoon Valley. No refrence was made to the Netherwing that I found. This can only mean that the dragons are just having a grand ole time there by themselves with no one else to push them around or subjugate them. And as a side note, killing the clan leader was something I REALLY wanted to do during the Netherwing Quest line back then, and not being able to just kinda sucked. But its alright, cause I was able to finish the job for good in Twilight Highlands, freeing the Dragonmaw orcs from the bloodlust they had been under since the years of the First War on Azeroth in the process.

Thank you for reading this, I hope you learned something and have a nice day!
